ASX rises; Cleanaway plunges 11pc; CPI in focus

The Australian sharemarket rose at the open, tracking a rebound on Wall Street as the strength of tech megacaps pushed shares higher.
The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index edged up 0.4 per cent, or by 30.6 points to 7714.1 at the start of trade, buoyed by gains in the information technology and healthcare sectors.
Australia's March quarter inflation figures at 11.30am AEST are the main focus for traders today - the market is fully priced for the Reserve Bank to start easing, but not before 2025.
Overnight on Wall Street, a rally in tech heavyweights lifted the broader stock market, with the group's high-stakes earnings seen by investors as a major test of the bull run in equities.
Shares in Tesla advanced more than 10 per cent in after-hours trading following remarks from founder and CEO Elon Musk that the automaker will accelerate the launch of more-affordable models to rescue its sinking revenue.
Stocks on the move
Perpetual rose 0.6 per cent after recorded a 6 per cent increase in assets under management. It also booked $5.2 billion in net outflows in the March quarter. Total assets under management was recorded at $227.4 billion at March 31, compared to $213.9 billion at December 31.
Cleanaway Waste Management slumped over 11 per cent after it denied speculation about being bought out by Seven Group. Its shares climbed 15.8 per cent to $3.01 on Tuesday, its highest close in almost two years after Bloomberg reported Seven had been seeking financing for a takeover.
Furniture retailer Nick Scali has confirmed it will acquire the United Kingdom's Anglia Home Furnishings - which trades as Fabb Furniture. The Australian Financial Review's Street Talk column first reported that the $1.14 billion retailer was going to pay a nominal price of 2 ($3.82) for Fabb Furniture.
St Barbara rallied 3.9 per cent after it recorded gold production at 17,257 ounces, up 33 per cent from the previous quarter. All in sustaining costs was booked at $3074 an ounce, down 22 per cent.
